Time is gold indeed, especially if we are talking about antique pocket watches. And a dedicated collector must be well to do to indulge. Considering the historical value and century old evolution in detail and design, you would probably come to understand why fanaticism for antique pocket watches exist. 

Collecting antique pocket watches is out of the ordinary. First, it is way costly for someone to own many vintage pocket watches most especially nowadays. Although there are still a few thousands left in the world, a collector cannot guarantee authenticity unless with careful product perusal.

A lot of timekeeping devices were made since the early century by ancient races across the globe. The sundial was invented by the earliest Egyptians. Sundial worked using sticks with stones around it, which basically depend on the movements of the sun to tell the time of the day.

In the 16th century, there were several attempts to create handy timepieces. Locksmiths were the major manufacturers of different kinds of clocks. The 17th century allowed makers some innovations in their mechanical designs. From that era onwards, they were more adventurous and curious with the designs and mechanics of pocket watches. They tried modeling small square, alarm-enabled watches that were worn usually around the neck, but it lacked certain accuracy.

After a few trial-and-errors with various forms and sizes, they finally achieved precision in round-shaped pocket watches through a number of discoveries especially the addition of third hand on the timepiece.

Antique pocket watches’ popularity significantly grew. The makers of pocket watches finally became confident in producing high-quality watches with improved mechanical system, precious materials and gem stones adornment. A lot of companies vent on designing pocket watches were established – Hampden, Elgin, Hamilton, and Waltham among others where pocket watches were manufactured with the highest level of accuracy. 

Pocket watches can be had mostly by wealthy ladies and gentlemen to denote their status and influence in the society. The first pocket watches were made available mainly in America and Europe. 

Pocket watches that still exist today sell for exorbitant prices but watches that were made earlier than 16th century cost higher. The original pocket watchmakers have bid goodbye to the industry since wristwatches took the limelight after the First World War. Avid fans of antique pocket watches are quite as detailed as their collection.

Some people, however, give them as gifts to their special someone. Never mind the price, since an antique pocket watch is really that impressive.
